French Curriculum Intent
“To have another language is to possess another soul” – Charlemagne
As a department we define the powerful knowledge our scholars need and enable them to recall it by having a carefully planned progression through our curriculum with content and skills clearly defined in our schemes of work which revisit and build on existing knowledge.
We teach and revisit a variety of themes at both KS3 and KS4, which include identity and culture, education, the world of work and future aspirations, local area, holiday and travel and international and global issues. Scholars will understand, narrate orally and in writing each theme on a personal and broader basis. They will apply the acquired knowledge and skills in order to be able to express and develop opinions.
From the outset we teach grammatical structures, syntax and vocabulary, using the correct terminology which provides scholars with the solid foundation they require. This will allow them to feel confident in applying the language. We develop the use of grammar on a regular basis using high frequency verbs, connectives and key vocabulary, which allows for a smooth progression into KS4 and KS5.
To further develop our Scholars we build the Cultural Capital by embedding their linguistic acquisition within a framework which introduces them to a wide range of knowledge. This goes beyond their own cultural experience and sets them up as intercultural citizens. In addition, scholars become more confident communicators and the impact of the curriculum will see an increased respect for other cultures and a sense of global community.
