PE Curriculum Intent

Our vision for Physical Education is to aspire all scholars to acquire a love for sport, a passion to be physically active and to develop lifelong participation in physical activity. We aim to provide a first class teaching and learning environment where both staff and scholars work hard together to secure knowledge required to achieve success. The Physical Education team are extremely committed to develop knowledge of performance, tactics and strategies as well as fostering creativity and evaluation skills in practical lessons. We want our curriculum to be a tool by which scholars can excel practically but also gain valuable life skills through team work, leadership and officiating. It is paramount that we foster an environment where scholars feel safe to ‘have a go’ and which also encourages enthusiasm to excel at the highest level and grasp the opportunity to represent the academy. Physical Education lessons will provide the opportunity for scholars to engage in high levels of physical activity and become highly educated about how to lead an active and healthy lifestyle. In GCSE and A Level Physical Education we aspire for scholars to gain the knowledge and understanding to achieve personal outstanding success to maximise their choices in further education and life. Scholars will have the opportunity to engage in exciting theoretical concepts in sport and apply these to practical whilst at the same time widening their knowledge and minds outside of the exam specification to engage in current issues in sport. Sport and physical activity provides the perfect vehicle to enhance and develop scholars’ self-esteem and key personal skills such as resilience, team work, tolerance, cooperation and tenacity. Our key aim is to provide a journey where scholars can develop personally, socially and morally coupled with a wealth of knowledge about how to improve performance and ultimately lead an active, healthy lifestyle. The curriculum design has been tailored to build confidence and courage in our scholars so they are equipped to embrace the wider world with respect, self-dignity and choice.

Implementation.

Our curriculum pathways and how they are delivered provides all scholars with the opportunity to engage through variety and personal choice. The breadth of our curriculum also allows the discovery of individual interests and talents within sport and physical activity. We want all scholars to feel they belong as part of a team, believe in their potential and become as physically, socially and emotionally well as they can be.

As Students progress through each Achievement Cycle they will experience a curriculum designed to maximise engagement, enjoyment and a thirst for participation in sport and learning. The Key stage 3 Core PE curriculum provides an extremely broad range of activities and the opportunity for all students to experience leading and officiating. Pupils have increased autonomy in Key Stage 4 by choosing which activities they wish to embark upon and the opportunity to achieve leadership and officiating awards. All children will follow a programme of the same practical activities but not in the same order. Appropriate retrieval of transferrable skills and knowledge will be transferred appropriately through the expertise of our PE team. All students will experience a complimentary health curriculum and the opportunity to enhance performance through self and peer assessment.

Examination Physical Education generates the development of knowledge about applied anatomy and physiology, health, fitness and well-being, movement analysis, physical training, sports Psychology and socio-cultural factors in sport. The development of knowledge in these exceptionally important theoretical concepts will allow scholars to be successful in many careers, such as, teaching, physiotherapy, coaching, personal training, sports psychology or the development of sports policy to name a few.

We endeavour to provide the opportunity for all students to participate in an extensive variety of extracurricular clubs, inclusive inter school competition and to embrace the chance to represent the Academy in competitive sport.

Through all pathways of the PE curriculum assessment is a moving picture that demonstrates active pupil thinking and reasoning. It is therefore immensely valuable to ensure lessons and the curriculum are refined to meet the needs of all learners. Within PE regular and deliberate checks for understanding are planned to check if pupils are on track to their learning destination. Each achievement cycle allows pupils to be knowledge rich about all aspects of physical activity and sport opening minds about the significance of health, mindfulness and the importance of lifelong participation in physical activity.
