Careers

Kirk Hallam Community Academy aims to ensure all scholars are self-confident, skilled and career-ready. This is achieved through a programme of activities that span every year group starting in Year 7 where scholars have an opportunity to learn and hear from those employed in different sectors, explore their own interests and ambitions and learn the skills needed to succeed in work.

Throughout Key Stage 3 and 4, scholars will experience multiple interactions with employers through Civics + Character Education lessons, careers talks, ‘drop-down days’, work experience, assemblies and in lessons across the wider curriculum. Scholars also have the opportunity of careers advice and guidance throughout the Key Stages and support in making decisions on their post-16 pathways.

The academy closely follows the Gatsby Benchmarks with our provision, which provides a framework in which we can significantly improve the employability and life skills of all scholars in the academy, regardless of academic ability or the career interests they may have.

Ensuring scholars think about future pathways and careers is something which is fully embedded into life at Kirk Hallam Academy. Throughout the building there are displays (see some examples below) outlining possible career options and all Scholar Home Rooms are named after Higher Education Institutions. In this way we aim to raise aspirations, engage scholars in conversations about their futures and provide them with the guidance they need to make informed choices.

In light of school closures for much of the past year, the academy has had to amend much of the provision for careers during the academic year 2020–2021. Below is an outline of some of the opportunities and activities which have already taken place or are planned for the remainder of the year.
