As soon as I set foot through the gates of Kirk Hallam, I was struck by how its location makes it the centre of the community. When you look across the lake and see the community that nestles around the school, you can easily understand why it is so important for our school to be a success—so that we can help contribute to making our community flourish. Upon meeting students and parents, one thing has become clear—that we must work with the community, develop clear links and make our school a place that we can all have pride in.
The motto of all Nova schools is that we “Work Hard” and “Be Kind”. To do this we need to remove all barriers to learning, all excuses for underperformance and place academic success at the heart of what we do in order to give all of our students choice and control over their futures. This means developing staff to ensure strong academic outcomes, ensuring that we challenge students to think and speak with an expanded vocabulary, instill knowledge and understanding of the world, and in doing so, create a sense of civic pride; ensuring that students develop a responsibility for their actions.
My own promise to our community is that I will strive to work as hard as I can in order to develop the youngsters in our care. I can’t, and won’t, promise that every decision that I make will be one that will please everybody, but I will look to build trust so you know that all decisions are based upon doing what is right for the school as a whole.
I look forward to working together in order to bring success to all of us by ensuring that we have pride in our collective excellence and remove excuses that something can’t be accomplished.
