Welcome to Maths

The Kirk Hallam Community Academy Mathematics department continues to improve and develop as part of the Nova Education Trust. We have embraced the relatively new National Curriculum in Mathematics and see this as an exciting recent development; it encourages students to apply their mathematical skills to everyday life and uses an investigative approach to learning.

Starting on entry to the school in year 7, students are taught in tiered groups based on thorough assessments. Student setting continues to be reviewed each term during Key Stage 3. The curriculum is designed to provide the right level of challenge for every student and develop their love and enthusiasm for mathematics. Investigative and exploratory work is encouraged in the learning of Mathematics together with a strong emphasis on the essential algebraic, numeric and geometric skills.

In any year, a mixture of learning activities is used, including teacher led discussions and tasks, small group investigations, use of ICT, practical projects and text book practice. To assist in our teaching, every classroom has an interactive whiteboard. Our aim is to make mathematics as accessible and enjoyable as possible for all our students through the use of a variety of teaching methods to accommodate different learning styles.

KS4:

During Year 9, 10 and 11 students study for their mathematics GCSE. Our students will sit the AQA Mathematics GCSE in the May and June of Year 11.

In Year 11 students follow a bespoke scheme of work designed around our assessment points. This ensures that every class makes the maximum progress possible ready for the GCSE Exams in May ans June. Further details of the scheme of work and key dates are available in the countdown plan below.

Sixth Form

Students in Sixth Form can study AQA A-Level Mathematics, AQA A-Level Further Mathematics and AQA Level 2 Mathematical Studies. We are a high performing centre for KS5 mathematics, frequently preparing students for Oxbridge examinations and eventual study at Oxford, Cambridge and other Russell Group universities. Further information on our Sixth Form provision can be obtained from Dr Bennison.

The scheme of work for Year 13 A-Level Mathematics and Year 13 Further Mathematics can be downloaded below, these show the dates of key assessments.
